Anti-social behaviour can have a significant impact on people’s daily lives, from feeling unsafe in their neighbourhood to ongoing nuisance or disruption. Understanding what it is and how it is managed is an important step in tackling it.
What is anti-social behaviour?
Under the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014, anti-social behaviour is defined as:
- Conduct that has caused, or is likely to cause, harassment, alarm, or distress to any person
- Behaviour that causes nuisance or annoyance to someone in their home
- Actions that lead to housing-related nuisance or disruption
ASB covers a wide range of behaviours that negatively affect others and the communities they live in.
Working together to address ASB
The Birmingham Community Safety Partnership team works with a range of partners, both within BCC and externally, to reduce the impact of crime and anti-social behaviour across the city.
This includes a number of initiatives designed to prevent issues early, respond effectively, and support communities:
- Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs): These place conditions on certain behaviours in specific areas to help ensure public spaces remain safe and welcoming. There are currently 7 active PSPOs. For more information, please follow this LINK
- ASB Case Reviews: A formal process that allows repeated cases to be reviewed by multiple agencies to identify further action. For more information, please follow this LINK
- Community Safety Intervention Officers: Community Safety Partnership has 10 Community Safety Intervention Officers(CSIOs) that work with partner agencies within the city centre and other selected areas. Their focus is to intervene at an early stage to reduce crime and ASB.
Through joint working with organisations such as West Midlands Police, housing providers, and local services, a coordinated and consistent response can be delivered.
