WalkSafe Birmingham – working together for a safer city

We have partnered with WalkSafe to help everyone feel safer while moving around Birmingham. Our shared aim is to create a safer, more confident Birmingham for everyone.

WalkSafe is a free personal safety application that helps people stay connected and informed wherever they are.

Whether you are travelling to work, heading home after a night out, or spending time on Birmingham’s busy streets, WalkSafe provides practical tools and real-time information to help make journeys safer.

What it offers

Alerting your contacts

The application has an SOS button that you can use whenever you feel unsafe.

With a single tap, your trusted contacts receive an alert that includes your live location. Once your contacts are notified, they can respond quickly and check in with you.

The SOS button provides reassurance that help from people you trust is always close at hand.

Sharing your journey

The WalkSafe journey-sharing feature lets you share your live journey with your contacts.

This feature allows you to enter your destination, select who you want to share your journey with, and begin your trip.

Your contacts can follow your journey in real time. If you do not arrive at your destination, WalkSafe notifies your contacts and prompts them to check that you are safe.

Sharing your expected arrival time

The HomeSafe feature allows you to set a destination and an expected arrival time without sharing your entire route.

After setting your expected arrival time and selecting your contacts, you can travel as normal.

If you do not arrive within the set time, your contacts will be alerted and will receive your live location so they can check on you.

Sharing your location

The FollowMe feature is for situations where you may not have a specific destination, such as walking, exercising, or running errands.

You can share your real-time location with contacts for a set time. Sharing automatically stops when the timer ends, and no automatic alerts are sent to your contacts.

This feature provides reassurance without requiring a full planned route to be shared.

Showing you local, trained, and accredited venues

The Safety Map gives you access to:

  • safety-accredited venues
  • recognised safe spaces
  • reported concerns in their area

This helps you to plan safer routes and identify places that offer help or support if needed.

The map includes venues that participate in safety initiatives such as Ask for Angela and Best Bar None.

By tapping a venue, users can view safety measures, address details, opening hours, contact information, and other useful details.
